The Israel Security Assistance Support Act was passed by the US House of Representatives on May 16 with 224 votes in favor and 187 votes against.

The legislation, proposed by House defense appropriations subcommittee chairman Ken Calvert, would prevent President Joe Biden from freezing any military aid to Israel, including the shipment of 3,500 bombs he halted.

Republican members believe that Mr. Biden has no right to intervene in Israel’s campaign when Tel Aviv is fighting to protect itself against threats.

`Passage of the Israel Security Assistance Support Act will send a strong message that House members stand with our ally Israel in its mission to protect citizens,` said Mr. Ken Calvert.

Chairman of the House of Representatives subcommittee on state and foreign affairs Tom Cole emphasized `this is a time for moral transparency. You either side with Israel and its right to self-defense against those who want to harm its allies.`

However, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives criticized the law as `partisan` and infringing on the President’s ability to conduct foreign policy.

The legislation is expected to be blocked in the Democratic-led Senate and President Biden has vetoed it in any case.

The conflict in the Gaza Strip broke out in October 2023, after a surprise attack by the armed group Hamas in southern Israel left more than 1,100 people dead and 250 kidnapped.

The White House expressed disappointment in the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the increasing number of civilian deaths and especially the attack on the city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are taking refuge.

`If Israel marches into Rafah, we will not provide the weapons and artillery they have used in other cities,` Mr. Biden said on May 8.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, accused Mr. Biden of facilitating Hamas and doing nothing to prevent the `accumulating danger` in Iran, which attacked Israel last month.

`The president took no decisive action when Iran planned to attack Israel and now, as Israel fights for its survival, he has halted weapons deliveries and threatened to veto legislation providing
